No One Is Coming to Save You. Why Founders Must Own Their Finances and Marketing
Imposter syndrome is something most founders experience at some point. For me, it often showed up when I wanted to outsource accountability. The responsibility. You start thinking, I shouldn't be doing this. This is not for me. I'm not capable enough. Someone else should work this out.
That voice in your head telling you it is not your responsibility? It is lying to you.
Why Founders Must Take Accountability Early
A couple of areas I think every entrepreneur should take accountability for, especially in the early stages, are finances and marketing.
Yes, you have people that support you. The bookkeeper, the accountant. But making decisions that have financial repercussions is your responsibility. Not theirs. The entrepreneur and the founder have to own that.
I will be honest. There were times I would gamble and say, right, we can kind of make this happen. Sometimes that paid off. But it was also negligence in terms of diligence and taking real accountability for it.
The Moment You Realise No One Else Is Coming
There were moments where I thought to myself, I should not be doing this. I cannot do this. I am not made for this. This is not what I signed up for.
But then you realise something quite important. No one else is coming to save you. You have got to do it yourself.
That is actually quite enlightening when you understand it. When you stop waiting for someone else to fix your cash flow, your marketing, your strategy, you start making better decisions.
Cash Flow Is Where It All Starts
Understanding the importance of cash flows changed everything for me. A good decision you make today, in something a month or so out, can have a really amazing impact down the line.
One key lesson I learned was to accrue the spend when the action is done. Not before. Not after. When you take ownership of the numbers, the business starts to move differently.
Stop Outsourcing Responsibility
If you are a founder waiting for someone else to figure out your finances or your marketing, you are going to be waiting a long time.
Step up. Own it. No one is coming to save you. And once you accept that, everything changes.
