As entrepreneurs, we’re wired to focus on growth, progress, and what comes next. New goals, new targets, new milestones. That forward momentum is part of what makes entrepreneurship exciting, but it can also come at a cost if we never stop to reflect.
I’ll be the first to admit I’ve been guilty of this.
About ten years ago, a friend said something to me that stuck. “When are you going to wake up and smell the roses?” I immediately understood what he meant. I was so focused and dedicated that I wasn’t recognising the progress I was actually making.
Entrepreneurs tend to be incredibly hard on themselves. Often, far more than anyone else around them realises.
That self-criticism usually comes from a good place. We want to improve. We want to get better. We want to build something meaningful. But the downside is that even small issues can feel catastrophic. A minor technical problem can feel like the whole house is burning down, when in reality it’s just a UTM code not firing correctly.
Without perspective, everything feels bigger than it really is.
Reflection is about zooming out.
It’s about asking yourself: where did I think I’d be ten years ago, and where am I now?
I had one of those moments recently. Ten years ago, I had nothing. No assets. Nothing built. No tangible proof that I’d dedicated myself to creating something meaningful. All I really had was some employment experience.
Fast forward to today, and the difference is stark. I’ve built things. I’ve developed skills. I’ve created value. None of that happened overnight, but it happened because I stayed in the game.
When you’re in the middle of building, it’s easy to forget how far you’ve come. Progress feels slow when you’re living it day to day, but massive when you look back over the years.
Reflection doesn’t mean lowering standards or losing ambition. It means recognising growth while still striving for more. It’s about balance.
Entrepreneurship is demanding. The pressure to improve never really goes away. But if you never stop to acknowledge progress, you risk burning out while standing on top of achievements you never pause to appreciate.
So take a moment. Zoom out. Look at where you started and where you are now.
Sometimes, waking up and smelling the roses is exactly what keeps you moving forward.
